Empire report that the Total Recall remake is on and will be directed by Len Wiseman (Underworld; Underworld: Evolution) and star Colin Farrell (In Bruges; Alexander).
Hmm – Not the two names that would immediately spring to mind for this but as long as Colin Farrell doesn’t sport another dodgy blonde wig and Wiseman pays attention to the ‘must do better’ report card from Underworld it could work. I loved Die Hard 4.0 so who knows?
My question is why they’re remaking it at all? Sometimes a remake is worth it – John Carpenter’s The Thing is awesome, but others like The Time Machine (2002) and The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008). should have been much better.
The original Recall with Arnie was, and still is, great so is there any value in redoing it? There are so many other SF stories out there that, on film, would be awesome – Nick Sagan’s Idlewild trilogy, Brian Aldiss’ Non-Stop or Nancy Kress’ Beggars in Spain. Or even an original screenplay – District 9 shows it can be done.
But maybe ‘new’ and ‘original’ is just too much of a risk for the studios these days.
